Our group Clearbrook Counselling is an association of counsellors in private practice who have worked together in Abbotsford for many years. We provide counselling to individuals, couples and families in emotional and relational distress.
Our view of counselling We aim to provide a caring and respectful environment in which people in distress feel safe to talk about their problems and deal with them.
We regard counselling as a process that is client-centered and solution-focused. This means that our clients are in charge of the process, while we as counsellors team up with them, providing emotional support, sharing relevant insights, giving professional guidance, assisting them in setting realistic goals, and supporting them in pursuing these goals.
We approach counselling mostly from a cognitive-behavioralperspective which recognizes that our emotional difficulties are largely the result of faulty thinking. Therefore, one of our major tasks as counsellors is to help clients examine their thoughts and attitudes, identify faulty thought patterns, and replace them with realistic and wholesome ones. Changed thinking patterns must then be translated into new behaviors.
Since our attitudes, emotional responses and behaviors are powerfully impacted by our past experiences - especially in childhood - we encourage our clients, when appropriate, to deal with unresolved issues from their past.
Finally, we consider spirituality to be a major component of personal wholeness. A client's faith can be a powerful resource for working through painful issues and making significant changes. However, in accordance with our client-centered approach, we let clients determine if, when and how they want to deal with spiritual issues in the counselling context.
